In the summer of 2009, Anthony Fontana joined the Intersect Art Collective and participated in the first of two exhibitions that year. The first was titled #secondhand and used short 12 second video clips to respond to prompts sent out via Twitter by curator Christi Neilsen. Here are the collected works from that online exhibition by Anthony Fontana.

Downtown LA Film Festival Project

The Union
a machinima animaiton by Anthony + Sandra Fontana

This work represents and acknowledges the importance of identity and relationship between of two avatars (those of Anthony and Sandra Fontana, the artists) in a virtual space. Furthermore, it adds to the continuum of machinima created by the artists over the last several years, developing an ongoing mythology of their virtual experiences and interactions. Much like a marriage ceremony, the avatars are portrayed celebrating, sacrificing, and intimately engaging and changing one another.

Avatar Meets Girl
a machinima animaiton by Anthony + Sandra Fontana

This body of work is the first by the collaborative husband and wife team known as Fontana. By reflecting on individual personalities and real world identities, similarities between virtual world persona’s are expressed through emotive animations common to the Second Life avatar, yet intriguingly unique. These works begin to examine the emerging language of machinima (machine-made-cinema) and its role in the continuum of traditional cinema language; machinima that documents and expresses the memories and experiences of avatars. Through a large aggregation of images, videos, and installations based on the
accumulated inventory of the Fontana avatars, Anthony and Sandra supply the viewer with information that is both identifiable and indifferent; bridging connections with those who understand the virtual world phenomenon and those who have not yet begun to understand its impact on society at large.

These short documentary and commercial videos were used to promote the sale of my graphic novel in the virtual world of Second Life.


Net(works): Art in pre-existing web platforms

The following videos were taken at the Southeastern College Art Conference in Charleston, West Virginia in the Fall of 2007. This presentation details my understanding of art in the virtual environment including insight from my own endeavors to exhibit art in Second Life.

Synopsis: I have been creating artworks in Second Life since 2005. Each body
of work has relied more and more on ‘in-world’ aesthetics,
capabilities, and audience. In a virtual world,where each resident has
the ability to “build and own their world”, where does art fit in?
There are three perceived art experiences in Second Life. The first is
recreation of the real; mimicry to the point that a work of art may be
purchased, taken home, and hung above a virtual couch. The second is
that of a performance or happening in which the audience and experience
become part of the artwork. The third is that which is built by both
the artist and the audience. Web 2.0-type collaborations and common
space peer production are arguably the most important phenomenon
happening in Second Life or on the internet. One good example would be
Machinima, or machine-cinema, in which director and actors must work
together to create a narrative. In my own recent work, I seek to engage
residents interactively, allowing them to add to the work I have
started. How this affects meaning, who “owns” the work, and how the
collaboration between artist and audience is valued remain vital
questions.
